Windows XP Systemtuning >> Tweak Windows for handling large Input/Output operations

Windows XP uses a certain area of physical memory to store I/O operations (Input/Output). Gamer or professional workers, for instance, need this area literally all the time. It is vital to lock a certain amount of memory to such operations. Windows tries to detect the best settings depending on the size of your physical memory.

Windows-Tweaks recommends increasing the Input/Output page area:

1. Click Start/Run... and enter regedit. Hit OK to start the Registry Editor.

2. Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management key and double-click IoPageLockLimit. Check Decimal and enter the following numbers depending on your memory configuration:

Physical memory

IoPageLockLimit

64 MB (or less)

Physical memory minus 8 MB. Example: 65536 (64 MB RAM) - 8192 (8 MB) = 57344

64 MB - 512 MB

Physical memory minus 16 MB. Example: 262144 (256 MB RAM) - 16384 (16 MB) = 245760

More than 512 MB

Physical memory minus 64 MB. Example: 1048576 (1024 MB RAM) - 65536 (64 MB) = 983040

3. Hit OK and restart your computer. While playing or working with highend applications you will definitely notice an increase of performance.
