A lot of users tend to experience a certain problem with the Windows XP setup routine. Right when setup displays Starting Setup the screen either freezes or shows a black screen with only a blinking cursor. The following steps might solve the issue:
- Windows XP did load a wrong driver that might not be able to detect your hard disk. In that case youll need to load the correct drivers from your motherboard or hard disk controller manufacturer and copy it on a floppy disk. During installation youll simply need to press F6 and load these drivers. Example: In our case we needed to browse to www.asus.com and go to Support. There we clicked on Downloads and entered the correct product code of our motherboard (P5ND2). In the Driver section we found the correct drivers for our controller: „Make nVidia nForce Chipset IDE RAID Driver Disk and „Make nVidia nForce Chipset SATA RAID Driver Disk. Since we had problems with an SATA drive we downloaded that, copied these files to an empty floppy disk and used these with the Windows XP setup.

- An external device (such as a drive) could not be detected by Windows XP. In that case youll need to remove all external devices that are hooked up to your computer using the parallel port (e.g. printer, ZIP-Drives), USB ports (e.g. Scanner, USB 2.0 disk drives, mouse) or firewire port (e.g. cameras).
- If both hints fail it is time to temporarily remove internal devices such as sound cards, tv cards, network cards or additional memory modules and hard disks. Make sure that onboard devices such as onboard LAN or onboard sound have been set to Disabled in your BIOS.
If the installation succeeds you can safely reattach all your devices and start installing the drivers right in Windows XP!
