Windows News >> New build of the Upgrade Advisor

WinVista-11

Download it here!

With the Windows Vista RC upgrade advisor you can determine if your XP-based PC can run Vista. The tool exists for quite some time, but recently Microsoft launched a new build 309 which is more user friendly.

This software is able to scan your computer and create a report of all known system, device, and program compatibility issues, and recommend ways to resolve them. The Upgrade Advisor can also help you choose the edition of Windows Vista that best fits the way you want to use your computer. Note that the upgrade advisor is not final, which means that the results are not always for hundred percent accurate.

If you already have an old version of the Upgrade Advisor and you start it, you will be prompted that an update is available. If not, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65926&clcid=0x409 and save the Microsoft installer file on your desktop. Double click on the file and follow the installation instructions to install the Upgrade Advisor. When you close the installation, by default the upgrade advisor will automatically start. If not, double click on the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor icon on your desktop.
After the program is started, the main user interface is presented.

Click on Start Scan to start scanning your system. The advisor then will determine which components and devices are in your system, to check whether the system is able to run Vista. While the program is scanning, at the bottom of the user interface, five buttons are available. The first four buttons correspond to brief descriptions about the four major Vista versions, Vista Ultimate, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business and Home Basic. Very handy to see which features the four operating systems have. The fifth button corresponds to an overview of the main features. Looking good!

When the scan is complete, you can click on the button See details. Immediately a brief conclusion is given if your PC is Vista ready in general. For exact details, on the left of the window you can click on one of the four major version of Vista. Next, for that particular version of Vista details are given which particular modifications you need to make to be able to run Vista, or to be able to run Vista smoother. For example, on my pc with a GeForce 4 MX 440 graphics card, the recommendation is given to install a new graphics card. Also, for some devices, proper tips are given e.g. to download an upgrade for my D-Link AirPlus XtremeG+ DWL-G520+ Wireless PCI Adapter from the Windows Update site after installation. And even about the programs running on your pc, information is given about the functioning of the program under Vista. Real handy!

The new advisor is definitely worth downloading and installing to check the Vista status of your pc. Make sure you often check for updates to get more accurate results and to solve possible problems! In the unlike situation that you want to uninstall the advisor, simply go to the Add/Remove programs section in the Settings window and uninstall Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor.

Have fun!
