Windows Vista is Microsoft’s most advanced multitasking operating system ever and also appeals to the so called “Megataskers”. Apparently, these are users that are running multiple multitasking applications (e.g. encoding/decoding, gaming) at the same time. AMD is trying to compete with Intels Core 2 Quad solution and presents the “AMD Quad FX” platform that features two dual-core processors on one mainboard. As with the QX6700 up to four CPUs can focus on the tasks which is especially useful with Windows Vista and future Vista application. At the Vista Lab we could see that AMD is trying hard to compete with Intel’s head start but only benchmarks and not marketing talk (and basically that’s what we’ve been hearing at the AMD presentation) can only prove that.
Combining processor and graphics AMD also explains that it tries to bring the two worlds of the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) together. This new “Fusion” vision will be a processor which is capable of all the graphics acceleration features. What will become of that vision we don’t know but AMD is working on it...
